West Mids League
With the new season fast approaching, preparation has begun for Harborne Golf Club’s quest for victory in the West Midlands Golf League 2015. As you may be aware, Gez Hunter stood down from the Captain’s role, at the end of last season, to spend more time with his Explanar golf training aid. As a result the baton has now been passed onto me, Scott Ryman. I would like to thank Gez for his commitment to the cause over the past three years with some great results and only falling at the last hurdle in the 2012 final, a sterling effort which leaves little to improve upon but will give it my all and be an honour to do so.
I would like to invite all those eligible to play (please see below) to consider representing Harborne Golf Club in this prestigious competition. The competition will be fierce for places with only eight players on any match day, but would welcome as many players as possible to make themselves available. If you haven’t played West Mids golf before don’t be scared to still give it a go, as the saying goes “don’t knock it until you’ve tried it”….. The golf is very competitive, but it is also a superb platform to improve particularly your mental game in the heat of battle. I will be adding a list to the notice board in the locker room for all those interested in due course. I look forward to seeing past players and new faces on the list. The more players in the pot can only improve our chances.
Now for a few technicalities-
The competition is open to gentleman golfers of Harborne Golf Club with Handicaps of 4 to 15 inclusive and played in a betterball format with players taking shots from the lowest handicapped player in the fourball (three quarters the difference in handicap).
Four 2 ball teams are picked for each match with each team comprising of a low man (4-9 inclusive) and a high man (10-15 inclusive) Matches are played on a home and away basis with a point awarded for a win, half a point for a half and hopefully what we won’t be seeing too much of, zero points for a loss. The resultant overall match score is calculated and entered in a league basis against the other clubs in our regional zone, with 2 points for a win, one for a half and zero for a loss. After completion of all league matches the top 2 clubs in our zone will progress to the knockout stages of the competition (the best 2 losers from zones C,D,E and F will also progress, we are zone E)
As a result of zone changes within the league this year, the clubs we will be facing are as follows- Dudley, Halesowen, Stourbridge, Penn and North Worcs
A full fixture list will be added to the notice board in the locker room shortly once a couple of the away clubs confirm dates for their fixtures.
I would urge any eligible player considering representing our fantastic Golf Club to just go and sign up for this year’s competition, you’ve got to be in it to win it. It is a great competition that instils fantastic team spirit and camaraderie amongst those taking part.
I would be more than happy over the coming weeks to have a game or two with anyone considering playing, particularly players who I may not have been fortunate to play with before. A chance to show off your skills could make all the difference. I will make myself available at all times if anyone has any questions or feedback. Let me know if you’re playing well (or don’t be ashamed to say you’re playing badly), If you feel that you have knowledge of the courses we are playing this year particularly as they may be new to many, let me know. Basically anything that can give Harborne an edge.
Together let’s make 2015 a fantastic year as part of Harborne Golf Club.
Thank you for your time.
