Harborne Golf Club

The Colt Cup 2014

On Sunday at Stoke Park Country Club, Spa & Hotel on it's famous 27 hole championship golf course the 20th Anniversary of The Colt Cup was held.

To give some background to the trophy, in 1994 a Colt Committee was set up to promote Harry Colt as one of the leading golf course designers ever and it was decided an annual tournament should be held, at which members of Colt courses all around the world could participate in.  Stoke Park Club was chosen as the venue, and the format was devised taking three golfers from each venue.

Since its inception, the event has gone from strength to strength with over 50 clubs participating from the British Isles and a further 15 from overseas. The tournament has attracted players from four different continents and established itself as one of the leading amateur club competitions worldwide.

It is thought Harborne Golf Club have entered this competition for over ten years now and playing on behalf of Harborne this year was Ian Humphries, the Captain, his son Adam and last but not least Dean Price. Ian had played the course before but for Adam and Dean it was a first.  The three man team had to play 18 holes in the morning, followed by another nine in the afternoon. The best two scores from the three players are then taken both morning and afternoon leading to a 27 hole team total.

As you will have probably have heard by now, the Harborne Trio won with a great score of 104 stableford points, five clear points ahead of the runners up.  After the first 18 holes they thought they we were in a good position and stood a chance of a prize but never did they think they would win it.  Afterwards, Ian Humphries had this to say 'A fantastic day, a fantastic venue and what a result, Adam did play very well but we all did our bit for the team.  Had lots of messages from the members of HGC which is really nice and what a fantastic trophy to win.'

With winning such a prestigious trophy, there were plenty of photos taken and Adam has kindly offered to share some of them plus he had this to say 'I'm thrilled to have won such a prestigious trophy in my Dads first full year as Captain. To have come up against teams from the likes of Port Rush, Wentworth and Sunningdale makes it even more special. It's also a nice feeling to finally have HGC finally engraved onto the Colt Cup having come so close in past years.'

Deano Price also agreed they'd had a fanatastic day and how extremely well organised the day had been.  It was 'enjoyed by all teams and to win representing the club was the icing on the cake!... Already looking forward to a Harborne's return next year to try and retain such a prestigious  competiton as the Colt Cup!'

After all the celebrations the trophy stays with the organiser but the triumphant trio have returned with a smaller replica for them to them to enjoy until next year when on the Saturday HGC will play a match against Royal Portrush who won the overseas competition and then on the Sunday the title is up to be defended.

Until then though, may I say on behalf of everyone at Harborne, many congratulations.  It's a fantastic achievement, how you got to sleep on Sunday I'll never know!
