Fun, fun, fun

This weekend saw an action packed weekend for HGC and its members.  A mixed Texas Scramble was the order of the day Saturday, and from all accounts it was a great way of meeting newer members and having a thoroughly good laugh whilst enjoying your favourite sport.  It sounded like everyone who played was a winner but the team that ultimately came out on top were Angela Sharpe, Richard Insley, Stephen Keay and Andrew Eaton with 58.2 points followed closely in second place by Mervyn Wood, Paul Hall-Annison, Colin Baker and Hayley Davies with a score of 59.3.

Golf on Sunday was a slightly more serious affair with a couple of important matches being played on what was an extremely blustery morning.  The Peter Butler Bowl final was played out between James Wright, Peter Lane and Philip Terry and having won the knockout round, James Wright did it again to win with a score of 74 net.  For the ladies section, Debbie Naylor and Helen Palmer went head to head in the Final of the Presidents Cup which has seen sixteen ladies qualify to play in the knockout.  The Cup was won on the last hole by Helen.  Congratulations to all the winners over the weekend.

Sunday afternoon at HGC was more of a relaxed affair.   As you all know the Warwickshire Ladies County Championship  is coming to HGC next year and in preparation the county ladies were out on the course and will be visiting monthly from now on practicing and getting to know the course.  I was lucky enough to be out and close by to a group as they were about to tee off.  Being the polite golfer I’m trying to be, I waited for them to go first.  They were great to watch and with their tee shots looking so effortless, their balls just seemed to fly for miles.  I wasn’t intimidated in the slightest as I took out my little old seven iron to hack my next shot but definitely something to aspire to.

Which leads me on nicely to a lovely afternoon that was organised by Katy Hannan for the Ladies Academy to play a friendly, nine hole greensomes match with a few of the more experienced ladies of the club.  Meeting at three, we all stood there feeling a little apprehensive but we needn’t have worried as our mentors, Katy, Helen, Thelma and Debbie (a vision of white loveliness on an autumnal day) joined us we were put at ease straight away.

I had the pleasure of playing with Katie and all went extremely well on the first hole thank goodness because you never know.  Our jubilation was rather short lived however, when it came to the 2nd hole!  What happened next is our secret for evermore and which we paid for with a blob but we did laugh.  We took the rest of the holes at a leisurely pace interjected with pearls of golfing wisdom and before we knew it we’d finished.

Being the first out, we did have a little wait for everyone to return which we put to good use by rearranging the club house so ten ladies could enjoy a cup of tea and a natter together.  I’m pleased to say everyone came in having enjoyed themselves.  After the scores had been taken by Katy she surprised us with some golf balls for the winners who were Simi and Helen.  Congratulations to you both.  Katy then produced ball markers for us all, so no losers in our little comp!

On behalf of the Academy I would like to thank Katy for organising our afternoon and for all the ladies that were willing to share their time and knowledge, especially Helen and Debbie, who’d not only played Saturday but had played eighteen holes that morning.

Golf wasn’t the only sporting activity this weekend for HGC members.  Dave the barman was raising money for the Edwards Trust by completing the Birmingham Half Marathon and I later found out Patrick Palmer also took part and achieved his second best time.  Congratulations to you both.

All in all, another good weekend for HGC.
