The Noel McKeown Memorial Snooker Final

The Noel McKeown Memorial Snooker Tournament Final took place for the first time, last night at HGC.  To mark this very special trophy in honour of Noel, John Crutchley was the referee complete with white gloves, and our two finalists, Phil Clarke and John Rollason, wore black suits and bow ties.  Lawrence Roberts aka Lol had previously spent three and a half hours preparing the table for this auspicious occasion which wasn’t an easy job as dust and grit from the new patio works outside had made quite an impact on the baize but good old Lol revived the table to its former glory.

Mr Captain set the scene for the match before both men took to the table in good spirit, despite being told they look like bingo callers, and play ensued to quite an audience.  Phil Clarke took the first game so John had everything to play for in the second match but sadly for John, Phil took control once more winning the second game to win the trophy.

Mr Captain helped round off the competition with a few words of congratulations before handing the mike over to John Crutchley, who has orchestrated and supplied the trophy for this memorial competition along with the help of Paddy Gill.  After John’s few words commiserating with John Rollason, the trophy was handed over to the worthy winner, Phil Clarke, who was heckled by members for a speech.  Noel McKeown was fondly mentioned by both Phil and John as being a big snooker fan so if he was looking down on last night I think he’d be rather chuffed with it all.
