Highlighted Minutes of Nov 1964

Present

All members of the Committee.

Minutes of meeting held on October 12 were read, confirmed and signed by the President, with the proviso that members be notified re daffodils being planted.

Reports

Treasurer

The Treasurer estimated a profit of from £300-350 had been made on the year.  Investment income, subscriptions and bar takings are up as are house wages and expenses and depreciation.

Finance

Mr F Woodhouse mentioned the rather abrupt manner in which the rise in subscriptions had been made known to members and regretted it had not been done in a better way.

Captain

He found members were objecting to paying Assistant Professional, Leslie Powell, at £1 per round.  After some discussion the Captain was told to see Peter Butler and tell him Leslie must improve his game if he wants members to play with him.

Booking for caddies to be raised at once to 6d and the Professional to be responsible for general behaviour of caddies on club premises.

The Secretary was to see Peter Butler, re Mr Leach's jobs, including acting as starter at weekends and meetings.

The Captain mentioned that some members were inclined to ignore the rules re slow play, mentioning one four ball in particular that he had had to talk to, as a result of this it was decided that the Secretary write to Mr Lowe re his behaviour on Sunday 15th.

The Captain asked if the Secretary would find out about obtaining a new flag for the Clubhouse and advise the Committee by next meeting.

Bainbridge Shield

A letter has been received from the Warwickshire Union re finals in this tournament.  It was decided that the Secretary write thanking them for their letter, Committee having noted contents and being pleased to see they are taking control of the competition.

Greens

Chairman of Greens Committee, Mr C Withers, reported that the cost of planting trees had been gone into very throughly and it was estimated they would cost £600.  The Committee approved that planting go ahead, cost not to be more than £750.

Mr Withers wanted the Committee's opinion re planting trees or a hedge against the fencing of the 4th hole and the Committee decided a mixture would be attractive.

The Greens Committee could not see their way to proceeding with the extension of the putting green yet.

Daffodil planting was to start soon.

The Secretary was to ask the Royal Artillery if they would like to blow up the bridges an an exercise for themselves, and this to be co-ordinated with the contractor for the new bridges.

The Greens Committee feel that the Police are more of a hindrance than benefit to the course, as they are fast fouling fairways on the 12th, 15th and 16th holes as well as the rough in between.  Also dogs have annoyed players at times.  The Committee would like to ask the Directors to have words with the Police.

The bell given to the Club for use at the 2nd hole, was felt that if this was placed on the course it would attract the unwelcome attention of children and it was suggested that an alternative use for it might be found in the Clubhouse, where it would be reserved for use by the President or Captain on occasions when members attention was required at meetings, etc.  The bell is to be hung at the fire place.

It was suggested that a ladder should be provded at the 2nd tee to help see down the course.  These two ideas were approved by the Committee and the President expressed his gratification at the work being done by the Greens Committee.

House

A new fruit machine was now installed.

He asked that the Secretary buy new mats for use with shower bath in men's changing room and a new brush for shoe cleaning at the side entrance to the locker room.

Handicap

The Captain suggested that handicaps should be adjusted by the Handicap Committee at their discretion when members fail to enter four medals in a year.  This was ratified by the Committee.

There followed a discussion re new members to be admitted to the Club and it was propsed by the Captain, that up to 40 new members be accepted as 5 day members, who would remain in that category until a handicap of 18 is achieved.  This was seconded by Mr F Woodhouse, and passed by the Committee.

The Secretary was instructed to start a handicap file in card index style as soon as possible.

Entertainment

Mr L Hale reported that a successful supper dance was held in October and since then a wine tasting party, Bonfire night and a smoking concert (live perfomances, usually of music) had been enjoyed by all who attended them.  A Housey Housey (bingo) night was to come on November 18th.

New Members

Five new members including two lady members and one junior joined and three people's applications turned down.

Any Other Business

The Secretary was instructed to put up the Christmas Fund List as soon as possible.

The Captain read a letter received from Mr RJW Baldwin of Warwickshire union re use of Scouts as caddies on any one day in the year, also the appointment of one person to be in charge of the Juniors in the Club and asked members to think about these two suggestions for the next meeting.

Signed

Mr Frank Evans, President
